Game Ideas: Zombie Rock

"Shawn Rocks the Dead"
With the seemingly endless parade of new rock games and the plethora of instruments that accompany each release, I think it is about time someone put the power of ROCK to good use. I think it is time to use the power of ROCK to kill some zombies. Read on to learn more about my idea for a good old fashioned zombie killing rock game.
I think back to 80′s music videos where ROCK had the power to warp reality and make stuff explode. Like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb2tGQ_7KUI (check out 1:11).
The story is simple but powerful. The zombie apocalypse is upon us and it is up to Eddie (our hero) to use the power of power chords to end the zombie threat. He does this by using his amazing guitar playing skills to make zombie heads explode. The reason Eddie’s guitar playing makes zombie heads explode can remain up to the player, or could be explained away with some scientificky sounding explanation.
Gameplay is similar to cult classic “The Typing of the Dead”, only instead of a keyboard, the player is armed with the guitar peripheral of their choice. As the zombie hordes advance, your playing will send out bolts of pure rock awesomeness which will cause the zombies heads to explode. Certain enemy types require you to use the whammy bar to send out pulses of awesome before the zombies’ heads will explode. Boss fights could have crazy zombie creatures like zombie elephants or skeleton T-Rex. These would require super fast reflexes and timing as they throw stuff at you, that you have to send back with bolts of ROCK.
The challenge of the game comes in the sheer volume of enemies that are coming at you. I am picturing hundreds of shuffling undead trying to eat your brains. Each zombie has a little box on their chest. Inside this box are the colors that you need to hit on your guitar to defeat that particular zombie. Simple zombies require a quick power chord, while more powerful foes like zombie wolves might require a sequence of ROCK to defeat.
Rather than a standard rhythm game where you are essentially tapping along to the music, in this game you would be creating music as you are killing the undead. Each color would have a different sound and you could go into the options menu and adjust sliders to add more or less distortion and reverb, as well as other cool effects. This design would require someone with some musical talent to arrange the colors in a way that would sound reasonably cool, but the end result would give players the feeling that they are creating music rather than tapping to the rhythm.
Also star power transforms the zombies into hot chicks in bikinis like an awesome beer commercial from the future.

Scott Reeser says:Couple this with an optional co-op mode where the 2nd player drives around the 1st player on top of a vehicle while he commits aural, zombie genocide.

Jacob says:My question is, what do you do after using star power? after hundreds of zombies and then all of a sudden hot chicks in bikini’s? i mean come one, would you be able to play some cords and they become groupies? please go more in depth then that.

Thee Johnson says:I like the idea at it’s core or more specifically it’s skin. Zombies are always good but (and bare with me) why not save them. It’s more believable. Free them WITH music. It would bring to mind greats like Jimi Hendrix, The Hollys, Jethro Tull (for people like Dave), The Rolling Stones and the likes. You still can keep the bikini babes but forgo the violence. Make a pass rating of say 75% needed to survive. When you save all of the people from their zombie state, you then would have to preform an on the spot concert to “save” the people and guarantee that they don’t regress back into zombies. Another thought is if you score 5 stars in the concert, you get a bonus “VIP” concert with all the girls that you saved throughout the level where things get a little more “suggestive”. Eat you heart out Dave! I think I might have something here.
