Rock Out With Samples of Nobuo Uematsu’s New Band, Earthbound Papas
It’s no secret that Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the classic Final Fantasy games, likes to rock. For about seven years, Uematsu played keyboard in the face-melting progressive metal group known to us mortals as The Black Mages. But after three albums, it seems the super group has disbanded as of late last year.
Was this the end for Uematsu’s rock career? Far from it! In fact, he’s already working on a new project in the same vein. Enter the Earthbound Papas. No, they don’t cover songs from the SNES classic, Earthbound. Instead, they cover various works from Uematsu’s career (including, but not limited to Final Fantasy) and perform new material.
Their debut album, Octave Theory, will feature arrangements of the operatic classics, Liberi Fatali (Final Fantasy VIII), One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy VII), and Bo-Kon-Ho-Ko (Lost Odyssey). You’ll also hear music from Guin Saga and Blue Dragon as well as four original tracks.
Those familiar with The Black Mages will feel right at home as both bands share not only a similar style, but also three band members (including Uematsu himself). The album won’t be out in Japan until March 16th, but you can listen to samples of 5 of the 9 tracks on their official site. Be sure to hit up Amazon Japan or your importer of choice and preorder your copy for 2,800 yen (roughly $33.45) before it’s too late.
