Sega Dreamcast: THE UNBOXENING!!

"It's Thinking!"

Our very own Lucas Janke never had a Dreamcast when it was first around. After having been at Gamer Time for a while, his co-workers finally convinced him to pick one up. Sadly, before he ever had a chance to try it out, his house burned down taking his game collection down with it.

Shortly after that, he found one at a garage sale on the cheap. Not just someone’s old gaming console. No, this one was brand new in the box. He has been waiting to open it, so we are very happy to be able to bring you the unboxing of a brand new Dreamcast on the console’s ten year anniversary.

See all the pics after the break.

As you can see, Sega was very confident in their console at the launch. It was not misplaced, it just turned out the mass audience was still hung up on Sony’s Playstation brand.

Not only did they include a modem, they even had their own internet service you could sign up for in the form of SegaNet. The 56k modem was pretty standard at the time, but if you did have high speed internet, there was an adapter available.

I have a feeling Microsoft’s designers were Dreamcast fans. The 360 controller’s look and feel is very much a modern take on what Sega did with the DC controller.

So clean and shiny, fresh out of the box. I am insanely jealous.

Where did you take the piccies boys? The prospect of seeing piccies of an American game store excites me almost as much as the unboxing itself, have to appreciate they’re all imports for moi! ;)

Seriously though I was always puzzled by the change in boxes and styling between the various regions. Our Dreamcast logo was blue, our game boxes were blue, and chunkier (admittedly harder to open, but gorgeous to look at)

Our boxes were a sleek mix of dark chrome blue, white and light blue, it just screamed minimalism and sexiness, it came in the sort of box Apple does now.

    Ohhhh Dreamcast…

That was awesome. A video would have been nice, but the pics were great too. Honestly, I remember opening mine on Christmas Day in ’99 and it was one of the best presents I’d ever had. I played it non-stop well into the new year.

I’m proud to say that that very Dreamcast is sitting nicely next to my PS3 and 360 to this day. It’ll never be gotten rid of and will always have a place within my hooked-up consoles.

Such a shame it didn’t get a full gen to shine. If all of those games were what it had in just 18 months, imagine if the console had had 4-5 years.

Oh well, at least Sega aren’t completely out of the running and they’re still making great games like Valkyria Chronicles.

    Thanks guys!

We only had the one camera, so it was either still pics or a low-res video. I’m sort of a photography nut, so I opted for the higher-res stills. I wish we could have done both though.

@Michelle - The store is “Gamer Time”, where several of the WD writers work/have worked. It’s a small independent store in my home town of Snohomish, WA (USA).
