Sound in Action #2 – The Modern JRPG
On the second episode of Sound in Action, I take a moment to examine the modern JRPG. This includes games that have been recently released as well as a few that haven’t yet made it to North America (and some that might never make it). This episode features a mix of in-game music and official arrangements. You’ll also hear me gush a bit about the wonderful Xenoblade soundtrack among others.
You might notice I used better recording equipment this time around so the quality should be substantially better than the first episode. I want to thank everybody who’s given me feedback in comments, tweets, Facebook, and Skype. It means a lot. It was also one of the main motivators for making the show biweekly instead of monthly. That’s right! Your feedback has already come directly into play in the show’s fate. Please keep the feedback coming so I can keep striving to improve the show.
As always, you’ll find the full track list with purchase links at the bottom of the post.

Four and a Half Minutes of Pure Final Fantasy Type-0 Gameplay Footage
Sure, Square-Enix might be concentrating its North American focus on Final Fantasy XIII-2, but Japan will soon get a far more interesting looking game in the series. Final Fantasy Type-0 is a fast paced action RPG and is part of the same Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology. While it may not be confirmed to come overseas, a Japanese demo has been released that will work just fine if your firmware is up to date.
Having played through the demo myself, I left quite impressed. The large number of characters you can play as with their varying weapons and abilities have a nice sense of variety. And each of the demo’s levels have a lot going on, some even involving multiple miniboss monsters. I’ve pieced together some highlights from each demo stage below for your viewing pleasure. (more…)
Barrel Roll! #129 - “A Ghost Mouse Screaming”
On this, the one-hundred and ninth episode of the Barrel Roll podshow, Adam, Jonah and Jesse get together to discuss ghost mice. They may be small, but they are still spooky!
On to more video game related things, Jesse has completed his second playthrough of Catherine. He also experienced all the Final Fantasy Type-0 demo from Japan had to explore and was left craving more. Adam finally got around to the first Puzzle Agent game with mixed results, then went back in time to play the Game Boy classics (classics here meaning games Jonah didn’t know existed until last week), Mario’s Picross and Avenging Spirit, which brought even more ghosts to the table. Jonah spent a very brief amount of time with Age of Conan: Unchained and Pirates of the Black Cove. Finally, Jesse and Jonah discuss the strangeness that is Trauma.
The new releases for the week are covered, along with more Air Bud references than are healthy for a single podcast to make (unless it is some sort of Air Bud fancast). Then in the news we talk Borderlands 2, the next run of “Nintendo Selects” and the probably fake full list of 3DS Ambassador titles.
