Barrel Roll #164 – “PAX Prequel”

1

PAX happened last weekend. You’ve seen the epic conclusion of the long running series, but what happened before? What is the origin story? How did we get our super powers? The untold story is about to be told!

Actually, we just didn’t have time to edit our pre-PAX podcast before actually going to PAX. Jonah is finally back and joins Jesse to talk about the long awaited release of The Last Story. Jesse shares his thoughts on the unlikely fighter that happens to be an RPG sequel, Persona 4 Arena. Jonah finally plays the wonderful Gravity Rush. And Adam Anania may or may not show up (spoiler: he never does).

Barrel Roll #161 - “Card Battle”

1

After discussion of this year’s crazy Steam Summer Sale, the guys break into what they are really here to talk about… the Ouya? Maybe? I guess that’s a thing.

On the 3DS front, Jesse and Adam teamed up to play through the Diablo-esk Heroes of Ruin demo. Apparently some mean ghost is giving the other ghosts a hard time. They are just trying to go about their regular afterlives, but that jerk keeps on messing with their stuff. It’s up to your bemohawked lion-man hero to save the day.

Jesse finished Gravity Rush and Oniken, and even managed to find the start-to-prison ratio of Final Fantasy XIII-2. In other words, he’s been busy.

Adam got a care package from Jesse which included the 3DS puzzler Crush 3D, which he seems to have some mixed feelings on. Meanwhile Mike, who isn’t the one in Japan, started playing Phantasy Star Online 2, because he needed another addicting loot based game in his life. He also played through Dyad for review.

Jonah got a Vita and while it came with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, he forsook the playing of it after a brief stint to move on to Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable and Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention. Because taking on two 100+ hour RPGS at the same time seemed like a good idea.

Barrel Roll #160 - “Rush, Rush, Rush”

This week on the show, Jesse, Jonah, and Wes reconvene to talk about video games.

Wes kicks things off with a breakdown of the new Facebook edition of You Don’t Know Jack, the snarky trivia game with no less than 40 releases worldwide, now with the ability to be played directly from your cubicle while you are supposed to be working! He also finished Max Payne 3, and Resonance (which he reviewed), and played the iPhone game The Act.

Jesse tells us about one of his new favorites, Gravity Rush. Not only does it break your mind with its gravity defying gameplay, but it is one more excuse to grab Sony’s new handheld. He also spent some time with the Pokemon/Japanese Warlords crossover Pokemon Conquest, which allows you to use cutesy creatures to determine the fate of an empire in the form of a strategy RPG.

Meanwhile on the PC front, Jonah has spent a lot of time with DC Universe Online, the now free-to-play MMO from SEO. It allowed him to play a Green Lantern game that was actually fun, and for that, he was most thankful.

Sound in Action #6 - Viva la Vocals

Some people would like to believe I record this podcast up in a tree fort with a cardboard sign on the door that reads, “No vocals allowed.” To them I present the sixth episode of the game music podcast, Sound in Action. 100% vocals. 100% awesome.

In this episode I take a look at vocal tracks from games as obscure as the cancelled version of Ragnarok Online 2 to as publicly appreciated as the indie darling, Bastion. There’s an unintentional consistency in style between many of the tracks, but music from Gravity Rush, Xenosaga II, and NieR come to the rescue with their wonderfully unusual sound.
