Why I Hate: Metacritic

"Kids Love It!"

"Kids Love It!"

If you check my reviews for Civ Rev or Mighty Final Fight you are more likely to be met with a weird Youtube clip or a Rambo reference than a numeric score. Although at first glance this might be seen as the result of severe head trauma, there is actual reasoning behind this decision to eschew number scores.

I understand that many people like having an easy number that will explain everything, but in the end I think that a number score is the worst part of any review. I am not alone in thinking this way. Adam Sessler of X-Play has railed against the way his scores are interpreted by sites like Metacritic. And there are countless others, just about every reviewer hates giving numeric scores and just about every reviewer is forced to come up with them so that they can be used for sites like Metacritic.

Review: Rise of the Robots 1 and 2 (SNES)

"The SNES Version Sadly Looked Even Worse Than This Screenshot"

"The SNES Version Sadly Looked Even Worse Than This Screenshot"

Its dark form slithers through the grass, its black sinuous form always just at the edge of your vision. You can smell it. Its dark and hoary smell sending the primal reptile portion of your brain into overdrive.

Run. Get away.

This is beyond the scope of any mere mortal, this is the kind of thing you joke about with your friends as you sit around a campfire. All the while knowing in your heart, that those ancient stories are true. No matter what our modern science tells us.

We know. There are things in this world that simply should not be.

Movie Ideas: Guitar Hero the Movie

"I can play on expert!"

"I can play on expert!"

Before you turn around and run away screaming, hear me out. I think that a Guitar Hero movie could be awesome and hilarious. I have always found these kind of comedies work best when people are taking ridiculous things way too seriously. I envision a whole group of people who are taking their plastic guitar playing way too seriously. I am talking full on guitar hero groupies who faint when Star Power is activated.

"Shawn Rocks the Dead"

With the seemingly endless parade of new rock games and the plethora of instruments that accompany each release, I think it is about time someone put the power of ROCK to good use. I think it is time to use the power of ROCK to kill some zombies. Read on to learn more about my idea for a good old fashioned zombie killing rock game.

Review: Facebreaker (X360, PS3)

Let me start off this review by saying that I have a touch of the carpal tunnel (I blame Blanka’s SF2 electric charge attack), but it is usually not that big of a deal.

But “Facebreaker” hurt me. Physically.

I love mashing on buttons as much as the next guy, but after a couple of bouts of Facebreaking some fools, I was on my knees trying not to curse, as my arms became a mass of pain and torture. Read on to find out if my suffering was worth it.

Review: Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution (X360, PS3)

"Dave's Long Lost Brother"

"Dave's Long Lost Brother"

“Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution” takes one of the most complex and revered franchises in PC history, cuts out a ton of details, and somehow manages to make one of the best strategy games to ever appear on consoles.

The Civilization games have long been a staple of PC gaming. Attempts have been made to port the series over to consoles before, but it never really worked. On PC the Civ games are very complex and full of all kinds of micromanagement details that just don’t translate well to consoles. Civ always seemed like the kind of game that was just too unwieldy and complex for controllers. You really needed the extra controls that a mouse and keyboard offer.

Do you ever have one of those little flashes of inspiration? Where you are sitting there doing some random thing and you think “I have a great idea for a game.”

Total Recall Review (NES)

"Insert Random Arnold Quote Here"

Total Recall the movie was all about the governor of California killing mutant martian people and pulling tracking devices out of his nostrils. If this movie doesn’t make you proud to be an American, then nothing will. There was something about memory implants, but the whole thing was just an excuse for Arnold to kill people and punch Sharon Stone in the face (which I am sure was an attempt to stop this) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMpTGVHR84g .

Is It Too Late For the PS3?

Sony Playstation 3 Polygonman Parappa the Rapper Is it too late for the PS3

With the Playstation 1 and Playstation 2, Sony was the undisputed King. Fanboys and fangirls can argue and make any claims they want, but the fact is Sony crushed the competition. For 10 years it wasn’t even close. So coming into this current generation Sony was riding high. They were riding in with a decade of dominance and they had the most powerful console in history. The perception was Microsoft was a one trick pony (Halo) and Nintendo was for kids and Pokefreaks. Of course, Sony was confident, they had never really been challenged, and it seemed like it would take a miracle to stop the juggernaut that was the PS3. It had everything going for it. It was a technophiles dream come true. Everything was built in from blu-ray to blue tooth to the Hard Disk Drive. This was the system that was going to usher in the HD era.

Then the PS3 came out and sold out everywhere. eBay prices sky-rocketed, and it seemed like it didn’t matter that it was the most expensive, it didn’t matter that the Wii was trying something new, and it didn’t matter that the 360 had a head start. Microsoft had its fun and the Wii was poised to make a little noise but the King was back. And then, something strange happened. Something that isn’t supposed to happen to mighty Sony. Suddenly, PS3 consoles were everywhere, and Wiis were sold out. Suddenly, everyone wanted the cute little souped up Gamecube with Motion Control, and the Mighty blu-ray HD monster was getting hammered. How did Sony fall, and how can the PS3 rise?

Review: The Bible Game (Xbox, PS2)

"Jacob's Ladder? Really? You just went there?"

"Jacob's Ladder? Really? You just went there?"

I trick Luke into playing a harmless little Star Wars game and he responds by unleashing a horror of biblical proportions upon me. If you were to take all that was terrible in the “Mario Party” and “Fuzion Frenzy” games and then distill them down to the point that all that was left was pure bile, and then throw in a couple of bits of Bible trivia you would have “The Bible Game.” Now I am in no way against the Bible and I am in no way against games. If I thought that this was an honest attempt to teach kids about the Bible, I would be all for it. Instead, this game is simply a cheap ploy to get church goers to fork over money.
