The Leftovers Russ's Picks GOTY 2010

Not every game we love makes it into the WingDamage top 10. Some of them just don’t have enough unanimous support. These are what we like to call “The Leftovers.”

So here ends my first year writing for WingDamage. It has been a lot of fun. I haven’t written as much here as I really wanted too, but I’ve made it a resolution of mine to write down more about the great games coming out over the next year on this fair blog.

But first things first. I’m going to lay down the games from my top ten list that didn’t make the cut for ZOLO’S GAME OF THE YEAR. I can’t say I’ve played every game this year, and there were some games I missed this year that sounded pre-made for my GOTY list, but time is ever marching forward. Without further adieu, here are my leftovers.

The Leftovers: Adam’s Picks

Not every game we love makes it into the WingDamage top 10. Some of them just don’t have enough unanimous support. These are what we like to call “The Leftovers.”

Picking one’s ten favorite games is no easy task. Especially in my case; just thinking of ten games I played over the year is pretty difficult. Despite my sometimes passionate sentiments towards games, I don’t think I’d consider myself an avid gamer. Heck, at least three games I bought last year I still have yet to play. Games are a waste of time, anyway!

But I do think I’m getting more into games, especially with the help of advice from friends. I did manage to play things here and there that were wonderful surprises, and I doubt I would have gotten into them otherwise. So, here are the top games that wasted my time in 2010.

Barrel Roll! #99 - “Mysterious Disappearing Flavor”

2

On a very special ninety-ninth episode of “Barrel Roll! A Video Game Podcast”, Wes returns to help us solve the mystery of the disappearing flavor. Sure, pineapple soda is delicious, but as soon as a brand makes their own version, it vanishes from the market. Is their some soda based conspiracy, or is old man Withers at the haunted amusement park up to his old tricks again?

After discussing the new games this week, the guys talk about what games they’ve been playing. Adam gives his initial impressions of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and talks about his return to Minecraft. Jonah finally sat down with Sin and Punishment: Star Successor. Wes gives us his thoughts on Back to the Future: The Game and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. Jesse is still trying to find the fun in Kirby’s Epic Yarn and also teams up with Jonah for some Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.

All this and more on the latest podshow from the Barrel Rollers.

Review: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (Singleplayer) (Xbox 360, PS3)

"When in Rome, do as the assassins do."

What’s this? Crotchety old schooler Adam is reviewing a modern, immersive, narrative-driven game!? After all that stuff he’s said about old games being so much better!? What’s the world coming to!?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I know this is quite a shock to you all. I am outed. Much in the same way a Halo and God of War loving self-proclamated hardcore would be sheepish to admit he likes Pokémon, I must confess that Assassin’s Creed is one of my guilty pleasures.

Okay, so it’s not like I’m actually embarrassed about it or anything. And as much as I’d love to review something like Donkey Kong Country Returns, truth be told I was looking forward to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood for some time (or AssCreBro as we’ve come to call it around the WingDamage HQ).

So how does it stack up?

Barrel Roll! #65 - “Fanfilmtastic”

fanfilmtastic mega man fan film

On a very special sixty-fifth episode of Barrel Roll! A Video Game Podcast, the guys have spent most of their time hunting monsters… again.

But even with being swamped (and by that I mean fighting giant amphibious monsters IN a swamp), we did manage to see the recently released Mega Man fan film and play a small selection of other games, which we proceed to talk about.
